Return the canonical units the index stores each attr of one kind in.
Units belong to an (attr name, value kind) pair, and only numbers carry any, so the default asks about the numeric kind; an attr the index holds in that kind without units maps to None, and one it does not hold in that kind is absent. One read of the metadata.
